Y’all know I love a simple recipe that doesn’t skimp on flavor. Well, this is one of those, for sure.

My family loves Subway, for better or worse. I tend to lean towards the wheat bun or spinach wrap — if you haven’t tried the spinach wrap, you’ve been missing out on something pretty incredible. It’s delish.
My husband and our boys, however, never waiver from their staple sub bun, or fillings for that matter. What can I say? They’re loyal to their foods.

They each choose different fillings but all three go for the Italian Herb & Cheese bun. Toasted, of course. Our oldest likes the meatball sub, which I have a great copycat recipe for here.
The other day I was at the grocery store and decided we should make homemade subs for dinner. I had a mini brainstorm session to figure out which ingredients I’d need and which ones I already had on hand at home. There’s only a few things you need for this one so it earned major brownie points from the get go.
Let’s jump into the recipe. It’s super simple!
*COPYCAT SUBWAY ITALIAN HERB & CHEESE BUN*
INGREDIENTS:
- 1 package sub buns
— 1/4 cup stick butter, melted
- Provolone & Mozzarella shredded cheese
- Italian seasoning
- Garlic powder
*For plain, traditional Italian sub bun see paragraph below labeled *TIP.

DIRECTIONS:
1. Melt butter in microwave (approximately 30 seconds) and brush onto top of sub buns.
2. Sprinkle desired amount of cheese on top of each bun.
3. Add Italian Seasoning and Garlic Powder, to taste.
4. Set oven to broil. Place buns on foil lined pan and broil in oven for 4-6 minutes, watching closely. Remove once cheese is melted and slightly browned.

Voilà! I’ve been told from some pretty credible sources that these buns taste identical to the “real thing”. Give them a try for yourself and let me know what you think.
*TIP: When I want replicate the traditional Italian sub bun from Subway, I just brush melted butter on top of the bun and broil for 4-5 minutes. It turns out perfectly.
Is anyone in your family a meatball sub fan? I have a fabulous recipe they’d love! Check it out here.
